03 LEED Platinum Home

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This home, envisioned by Coates Design Architects, seeks the United States Green Building Council’s highest rating for sustainability: LEED Platinum. The house, currently under construction, is located on Bainbridge Island, WA and sits high above Puget sound with open views of Seattle and Mount Rainier.

CHALLENGE

With wide open views of Puget Sound the project needs to invite those views inside. How does a building begin to blur the line between inside and out? How can an expansive view become part of the experience of an interior space?

SOLUTION

By using LaCantina products the inside can come out. The house utilizes a full 12’ wide opening that literally creates an open extension of the living space out onto the patio and into the dramatic view. Further, this amount of open glazing allows this view to be appreciated from nearly anywhere in the home.

GREEN DESIGN

“Green Building” features of this house include: Solar PV and hot water panels, ground source heat pump HVAC system, triple-pane glazing, soy-based insulation, vegetated roof system, rainwater collection and distribution system, and constructed rain gardens.
